I see that VN has made it to over 20,000 posts today. Many congratulations to James and the Moderators for keeping it all together. The site has been great fun and very helpful for all us members - it would be very difficult to imagine its not being there.
Do we know who made the 20,000th post? Perhaps they deserve an "I love VN" badge? Here's to the next 10,000 posts.

Well done Andy.
Have a virtual packet of Scampi Fries. But wash your hands thoroughly after eating them.
I'd pass you a virtual pint of Courage best but that would cost me £1.80 and I'm not made of money.

I started early too - using the Joint Academic Network for email because it was cheaper than a postage stamp! However I'm always impressed by the fact that
the Queen sent her first email in 1976.
By the way, Virtual Norwood was established on 15th June 1998. It was inspired by the dismal failure of advertising in the Yellow Pages.

Recently Unearthed E-Mail Reveals What Life Was Like In 1995
KNOXVILLE, TN—A 1995 e-mail extracted from the hard drive of a recently unearthed Compaq desktop PC offers a tantalizing glimpse into the day-to-day life of a primitive Internet society...
"We're very excited by this find ...
Written by a "scully666@compuserve.com" and addressed to a "makincopeez@prodigy.net," the writer expresses the ancient equivalent of boredom, asks the receiver about his or her status in their primeval office environment, then refers to the act of sending the e-mail itself.
This could be a fake discovery!

Maybe I'm just being an uber-geek but the domain prodigy.net was only registered on 09-Sep-1995 and I still have a copy of my welcome email from Compuserve dated 14-Aug-1995. I don't think we had the option of usernames in our emails at that time... my address was 100736,631 which if used in the nether regions of the net became 100736.631@compuserve.com.
Fortunately it seems the idea of usernames rather than numbers caught on.
(still it's not as bad as old style JANET email addresses, 20, 30, 40 digits long!)

We are edging closer to having 30,000 posts. Perhaps we can offer something like a custom member title or free upgrade to sponsor privileges for the member that nudges the counter over the mark.
But be careful not to get too frivolous... as Uncle Wilf said on a previous occasion "If I'd have known it was going to be a landmark post I'd have said something far more profound and evocative instead of going on about coffee."

I'll play safe, James - can I have an 'I love Norwood logo' on my profile please?
Let's hope the 40,000th post is a bit more exciting and noteworthy than mine!
I feel a bit of a fraud too, as I don't actually live in Norwood or the surrounding areas, but in Walthamstow!

But my purchase of a flat nr Crystal Palace/Anerley is being processed as we speak so I'll be more authentic hopefully within the next two months. This site/forum was very helpful in helping me decide upon this area to move to, so thanks everyone for a great online community!

You are absolutly right Andreas the new magazine will be out next week and will cover all aspects of Crystal Palace. This is replacing the old Palace People who went bust in April this year.
I have met the editor Chris Thomas and he told me that if anyone would like to give him any news on what's happening in the palace please let him know.
You can reach him on chris@the-palace-mag.co.uk.
Of course the fire anniversary will be featured in the first issue and the LDA proposals for the park, so I'm looking forward to reading it.
Well done Julius! We are happy to offer you a 1 year subscription with our compliments.

Dear James
Thank you very much, what a nice surprise. I have enjoyed the debates with everyone, it has been very gratifying. I have been living in Crystal Palace for nearly 20 years and I wouldn't live anywhere else.
Before that I lived in Penge and previously Sydenham. So it has been 24 years since I moved to South East London from Romford in Essex.
Thank you again.

To encourage new members to contribute, can I suggest an Introduction section (in the Members Only area), where they can tell us a little bit about themselves and existing members can say hello - I've seen it work well on other forums, and it would be nice to see more people join in discussions

What do you think?

Good, hearty grub and I do miss Churchills very much (
