Does anyone know what is intended on the site between Noodle Time and the Palace Pub? I see that some concrete foundations are being laid. Judging by the layout it looks as if a large advertising hoarding might be going up.

Is, perchance, this site now owned by Bromely Council?
Nick
As the automated sign has now come off the side of Noodle Time (if I remember correctly), you may be correct.
Silver
I think the pub may be planning to put up another ilegal ugly hoarding. It took the council months to get rid of the last one inspite of it being ilegal and the pub made a lot of money out of it while it was there. It would be great if the council could stop this one before it goes up.
Mary Nesbitt
Mere speculation but could it be that Sainsbury might be putting up a 'new launch' board?
Silver
We should all write to Bromley Council to stop this before it happens!
duckec01
It's a nice idea but in reality they have no power to take any action until the deed is done. It's a bit like expecting a store detective to apprehend a shopper before he shoplifts.
Silver
We all know what substantial powers they will have then! About nine months it took last time. How can we possible deter them doing it when they can make thousands of pounds before it is forced down. It's enough to turn us all disshonest.

Surely a moving sign on that site will distract motorists when they are making that very difficult turn. Can't we stop them on safety grounds. Do they need to ask for planning permission for this sign. The town centre manager is on this one. Let's hope she can do something.
Axean
The land appears to be owned by the pub. Are Bromley able to cause problems for the pub if it acts this way?
Richard Williams
Afternoon
I have contacted Bromley council planning department with regard to this. So far no response. If and when I do I will post on here.
Richard

A sign would definitely need permission from the Council, I agree that it takes a ridiculous amount of time to get signs removed and it does depend to some extent on the will of the Council. I can remember a couple of years ago one being erected on the flank of the Hollybush and it was gone within a matter of weeks.
DiscoStu
Unfortunately it is the biggest advertising board I have seen for a while.
I couldn't help but see it this morning

For those that feel inclined to complain about this sign I suggest you email any or all of the following:

Can't disagree. It certainly illuminates the junction. As for getting rid of it, bearing in mind there used to be a similar size (ie. 48 sheet) on the side of Noodle Time, it may be difficult. I will try and trace to see if a planning application has been granted when I get home (not to self). If not, then the enforcement office at Bromley should be contacted and our local councillors brought onboard.

Bluntly, it want it gone!
duckec01
Don't waste you're time looking Nick, there is no way consent would be granted, as it wasn't granted for the adverts on Noodle Time.

I have contacted Bromley planning by email but no response, I think the ward councillor would be a better bet as they can't ignore councillors.
Mary Nesbitt
While it's up perhaps we should commandeer the hoarding and post a large picture of the missing (bombed) section of the Royal Crystal Palace Hotel as it used to look. unsure.gif

Or maybe a picture of the Crystal Palace itself - it's large enough - which would be cheaper, and less disruptive, than Ray Hall's Plan to rebuild it ph34r.gif
weeble
Saw it the other day for the first time, gadzooks, it is a monster! ohmy.gif

Fingers crossed it hasn't got planning consent and can be removed!
gekko
Saw it for the first time last week when we were in the Bluebottle. It's incredible - how they have managed to get away with that I do not know. Has anyone had a response from Chris Gaster or the council at all?
ajames
There's a logo underneath that might lead us to the 'owners'. Does anyone recall what it was?
miles
I know the board is huge and ugly, but I can't help feeling that it goes some way to disguising how awful that plot looked before. I would quite like one to surround the overgrown grass on the corner of Milestone Road too ... and every bit of graffiti that Bromley have failed to remove in the last few years.
James
With a spot of gardening this corner of Church Road could look quite different. If it was landscaped and contained a sponsors logo such as the one on the flowers in front of the park gates it could be quite nice and profitable.
miles
Totally agree. I was being a bit too flippant about the merits of a board.
Uncle Wilf
I think James is right. With a little effort most drab looking parts of the triangle could look a lot better.
The trouble is effort and thought seems to be lacking in the main.
andreas
and money, Uncle Wilf.

Apparently the board has been put up without planning permission. This is not illegal as the owners can retrospectively apply to Bromley. If they are refused they can appeal. So it could be up there for some months.

I understand that the owners of the site are based at 409 Croydon Road, Beckenham.
Nick
Application 1

Application 2

Application refused both times for the advert on the side of Noodle Time.

The above three links require Internet Explorer. I cannot find any application for the new sign. Has anyone written to Chris Gaster? If not I will drop him an email.

If anyone needs a photo for a letter/email I have uploaded one onto my site here.

Nick
James
Links work in Firefox but you also have to change the filename to end in .pdf

Thanks for the photo Nick rolleyes.gif

I think another part of the reason everyone is so worked up is th choice of advert. Magners is the current gulp du jour, had it been an advert for Christian Aid week or NSPCC would we all be thinking a little differently?
ged
Why didn't we have people like Nick running in the recent local elections? smile.gif

Good work. If it's up illegally then is there an issue with taking it down illegally?

Not that I'm encouraging such actions... unsure.gif

The Council do not actually have to accept an application if the breach is flagrant or there have been previous applications. It is clearly flagrant and there have been previous applications.

I have therefore emailed the Chief Planner suggesting that they do not accept the application when it is received. To date I have not had a response.

Regarding the bit of land on Church Road may be it's a job for these people.

I saw something on TV about the Guerrilla Gardeners last week. What a fantastic group of people - certainly show the council up!
Nick
Just had an email from Chris Gaster (in response to mine of the weekend - very efficient) to confirm that someone had already complained about this (my inefficiency) and that the Council were already starting the process, but it can take some time.

Richard Williams
Hi

I have written to the Chief Planner at Bromley to raise my concerns over this sign. Like many I am unable to find any planning application on Bromley website with reference to this site.

If people wish to complain it is better to write a letter (a bit old fashion I know) but your complaints will be taken more seriously.

Richard Williams

Finally a response to my email to Bromley Council!

Good morning Mr. Williams

Thank you for your e-mail which I note is dated 22nd. May 2006, which arrived in my office this morning! I can only apologise on behalf of the previous 'owner' of the e-mail for the delay. However I would like to inform you that a report has gone to the Chief Planner for advert proceedings to be authorised to seek the removal of the hoarding. Unfortunately this procedure is not a quick process but the wheels are in motion! As far as future development is concerned, the planning history of the site shows no current planning applications. Any informal enquiries would have been directed to the manager of Development Control West, Mr. Chris Evans on 020 8313 4554 or chris.evans@bromley.gov.uk Please give me a call for an update on 020 8461 7730 should you require any further information.

Kind regards

Lynne Broyden

Thanks Richard - I wonder how long this is gonna take huh.gif

Well if the length of time taken to reply to the email is anything to go by...
Silver
It's not good enough to say it will take some time. Why will it take some time. If a crime is being committed the police don't stand by saying yes this is ilegal but it will have to go through the correct proceedures which may take some time.

The hoarding is dangerous as it clearly claims motorist's attention when they should be concentrating on negotiating a roundabout. As a dangerous structure, it should be removed immediately.

If the good people of this country are constantly being asked to tolerate non sensible rules and regulations, it can only lead to anarchy. If this happens it will be down to ridiculous council proceedure like this. The guys are in breach of the planning regulations. They are laughing at the planning regulations and who cah blame them. I too may put up a b...... great hoarding outside my shop, and collect thousands of pounds before they make me take it down. mad.gif
jannism
I should think anyone attempting to negotiate a roundabout at that point may be in possession of a time machine and therefore not governed by the current rules of the road. wink.gif
ajames
There's now an enforcement notice dated February up on this. Council will take it down if the owners don't.
James
Yippee! It's a disgusting blight on the neighbourhood.

Now we know - and about time too!
Nick
Excellent news. I look forward to the restoration of a reasonable view and the lack of lighting that could confuse a Space Shuttle coming in to land...
Silver
Give it a month and they will probably put another one up. I would too knowing as I do now that it takes about four years for them to force me to take it down and I will earn a packet from it being up there.
duckec01
mad.gif These advertisers sure know how to work the system. They have now put in a planning application. Which means that by the time it's been refused by the Council and been through the appeal process, they will get another year's revenue out it.

http://planningaccess.bromley.gov.uk/Publi...o=JZ46WMBT09C00
Nick
Planning permission has been refused. The decision can be seen here (PDF file).
Silver
This seems great but what does it mean. Can we all go and rip it down? or do we just go on swearing at it for another two years. If it was a person causing offence, that person would be removed.
duckec01
They will wait 6 months. Then appeal against the refusal which will take up to another year to determine.

With a bit of luck it should be down by 2010. Then we will probably see it go up again in 2011. The cycle starts again.
Local
Following Bromley Council's decision last month to refuse retrospective advertisement consent for the large illuminated sign at 2 Anerley Hill (DC/08/01253/ADV), the advertisers have now attached two illuminated panels immediately below the sign. Not only are these signs an eyesore in the Crystal Palace Park conservation area, they are a traffic hazard at a busy and complicated junction.

In the interests of road safety all three signs should be removed immediately. If the Council cannot take speedy action under planning law, the Police should be asked to use their powers under the road traffic acts. Whichever enforcement procedure is adopted, the advertisers should be warned that their blatant disregard of the decision is likely to jeopardise their working relationship with the Council’s officers.

I've written to the ward councillors along these lines.
