Following recent difficult events around Tulse Hill Station the residents of Station Rise and Maley Avenue are determined to make the area a much more pleasant place to live, work and commute from. That's why we're asking you to volunteer a few hours of your time to come and meet your neighbours on:
Saturday, 8 December from 10am - 2pm (meet outside Station Entrance)
and help us to make Tulse Hill Station a happier, cleaner and safer place for everyone.
With assistance from Lambeth Council we will be smartening the area up by cleaning the streets and getting handy with some paintbrushes. There will be 2 skips available for all residents who wish to throw out unwanted items (not 'white goods' such as Fridges, Freezers, Cookers etc. or Paint Tins). If you have 'White Goods' you wish to dispose of, please call the call centre on 020 7926 9000 and arrange for the Free Bulky Collection. Paint Tins can be taken to Vale Street Recycling Centre.
Refreshments and equipment will be provided by the Council for those taking part on the day. Longer term the Council are keen to improve the area over the next few months, so let them know you care by showing some neighbourly spirit and help us smarten the place up in time for Christmas!
For more information and to confirm that you will be helping please contact Keith at Lambeth Council on 07946 379725 or message me.
Please note: Wear Old Clothes on the day if you are helping!

love to the idea, how did you get it started? as I reckon folks around Crystal Palace could also do with this community and neighbourly spirit! Also, the Palace station could do with a bit of TLC and spruce, once a year.

I'd have loved to join in and help but I'm working that day. However, I think it's a great idea and will be with you in spirit. I'm sure you'll all have a fun time despite the hard work.

As the chair of the Thurlow park Safer neighbourhood panel this idea was developed from one of our meetings. It is part of a crime reduction stratgy. which involoves the Met Police. British transport Police, Some departments of Lambeth Council, the Public carrage office, Fire Brigade and Southern Railway.
Each area is indervidual so the partners may be different. It is part of what is called an EVA and works using the therory of the broken glass experince in New York.
ALL safer neighbourhood panals can request one of the EVA's and is one of the tools available to the panels to request from a structure within local partnerships called Joint action group in Lambeth but may be called a Partnership operations group or a problem solving forum dependant on which Bprough you are in.
Fresh view has to be communty lead with the other agencies falling in behind to help and support of course some of the work can be done by those on Communty service called pay back
If this i the type of thing that you think can improve your area I would strongley susguest that you contact you ward based safer neighbourhood panel.
This is very much related to the amount of crime perseieved by any local panal but it is not automatic - we had to get the our local Cllrs to represent us with the big guns with the Council. The police were up for it the moment it was metioned

Thanks Lizzie. Glad to hear people think it's a good idea. It might not work miracles but it's a way of showing that people in the community really do care about their local area and will take action to do something about it.

Richard, this sounds phenomenally difficult to engage with from my point of view. The EVA acronym - what does it mean? I'm sure this is a good scheme but couldn't it be a bit more accessible for people who aren't familiar with day to day local government issues? (I've a PhD and can't work out what this means).

Hi guys,
Thought this would interest you.
http://www.pledgebank.com/. I met the guy who started it last night at a Webby event. He said that of all their various sites, this one has the lowest conversion rate. But I was going on about how the people in CP and the surrounding areas do seem to be pretty committed to their local area.
Basically, you can pledge to do something, but only if X number of people also pledge to do it as well. So you can all pledge to clean up Tulse Hill station on a certain day, but only if 5 other people also pledge to turn up as well.
Other really interesting things he does are

Thanks for all the posts. Thought I'd report back on this. Despite the awful weather today we went out and did some clearing up. We cleared one and a half skip loads of rubbish from around the station and especially the bank down the side of the alley between the station and Norwood Rd. We also removed 86 dumped tyres from Avenue Park Rd. Our local councillors John and Clare Whelan and Irene Kimm were there as were some council officers who worked really, really hard. It was a great effort and some of the rubbish we cleared had been there for years. People were stopping to comment and the Police Community Support Officer stopped to say how impressed he was. The guy in the Railway pub bought us tea from the cafe.
Now we hope that this will bring more attention to the area because we have shown the community care by being prepared to come out in the rain and get our hands dirty. We hope to organise a similar event next year - hopefully in warmer weather!
If you want something like this in your area then you need to speak to your Streetcare Team and Community Safety Team in your council. Lambeth have done several of these 'Operation Freshviews' and were recently commended for them by the Audit Commission. If you are in Lambeth you can request a Freshview by contacting the Streetcare Team. It needs to be an area where there is lots of litter and it's run down, but it needs to be community led and you need to get some volunteers.

I was thinking of you today and wondering if you did carry out all the work in the dreadful weather we suffered. 'Twas bad enough going to work and back on the bus for me, so my heart was with you in more ways than one.
But - you all got out there and did it!!!!
It took guts to get out there in the wind and rain - a big round of applause to you all.

Thanks, Lizzie. My whole body is still aching like never before from the exercise. Great way to keep fit - who needs a gym subscription?!
