Pour out a glass of water and let it stand for a while. If it goes clear then the water is okay - it's just air in the mains that will work itself out in a few days. The problem is usually caused by repairs to the mains.
A quick search on the forum for "cloudy water" pulled up this topic in our archives...

Indeed.
However, I'm on Thicket Road and we've been cloudy for about 2 months now.

It sounds like there is a mains leak somewhere that needs fixing - if it is just one tap it may be caused by limescale buildup underneath the spout.

Funnily enough, mine was cloudy last night. However after running the tap for a minute normality returned.

Like Nicky, our water has been cloudy for a couple of months now too; we are in Waldegrave Road. It's fine once it has been standing for a while but it would be good to know what the problem is, especially since it seems to be affecting quite a few people.

There's a constant trickle of water pouring out of the ground halfway along Thicket Road thats been there about the same period of time.
My thoughts were that if it was mains pressure (and enough to affect Waldegrave Rd/Belvedere Rd!!) then it would be a much bigger flow of water.
Sadly I own up to adopting the "well someone else must have phoned by now" approach.

I'll get off my apathy-horse and give Thames a call myself.

Well that didn't take me too long....
Spoke to Thames Water. They've had the leak reported and it is due to be fixed today(!?!?!?).
I enquired over the whitewater issue and they've got a record of reports 'across multiple postcodes'. They've investigated and it is definitely due to airation (sic). Water quality has been tested and all is fine. The Thicket Road leak is a potential cause.
I guess I should provide an update on their alleged engineering works tomorrow shouldn't I ?

That's great - thanks for ringing Nicky. I'm afraid I was adopting the 'it'll sort itself out' approach

Got it in Anerley Hill as well. I have seen it before but I always thought it was something more localised like my pipework.
Its quite weird watching how the water goes from a grey and cloudy colour to crystal clear, and still tastes good!!
