Design agencies?

Could any graphic designer tell me if there is such a thing as a directory of design agencies? As a freelance copy editor/sub-editor/proofreader, I make new contacts through the two bibles of the publishing industry: The APA (Association of Publishing Agencies) Handbook and The Writers' and Artists' Yearbook. I'd like to buy or find online the equivalent for the design industry, but am at a loss, despite an extensive net search.

I'm (self-)employed by day as a magazine sub-editor, mainly at The Times, though I've worked on 50 or so other titles to date, plus six books, several websites and a plethora of marketing materials for a couple of agencies. In short, that means I do the 'invisible mending' on a writer's copy, pruning it to fit the space available but retaining the story, sense and style; polishing it grammatically; ensuring it's factually accurate so no one will sue; and writing the witty, pun-tastic headlines, captions and other 'page furniture' that makes the reader want to read on. I'd like to do more work from home, and short projects, such as knocking into shape the copy for brochures, pitches, packaging and the like, could be turned around promptly alongside my day job. If anyone could point me in the direction of a source of new opportunities, that'd be great.

Calling any budding mumpreneurs (or entrepreneurs or freelancers)

For any local mums who are dreaming of setting up their own business but not sure what in, we're holding a meeting on Monday 19th October to share the Arbonne opportunity. Arbonne is a Swiss-formulated, botanically-based skin care business that launched in the UK just under 2 years ago.

The Arbonne meeting will take place between 1000 and 1230 on Monday 19th at the Blue Mountain Cafe, 13 North Cross Road, East Dulwich. It will be informal and mums are welcome to drop in at any time to have a coffee and hear about the Arbonne business opportunity and sample the products. Arbonne is a fantastic opportunity for everyone but in particular mums who'd like to find something flexible to fit around the family. It's perfect for anyone who dreams of being their own boss or taking charge of their own career and making it fit round them.

The skin care business is internet-based, run from home and gives enormous flexibility and freedom to the way you work. The company has been in the UK for just under 2 years but is already doing incredibly well, even in a recession.

Some background on the Arbonne product range:
- Botanically-based
- pH correct
- Hypoallergenic
- Dermatologist tested
- Never tested on animals
- Formulated without animal products or by-products (Vegan approved)
- Formulated without mineral oil
- Formulated without dyes or chemical fragrances

Finally, although the meeting has been arranged for local mums, it is open to everyone! If you're dreaming of setting up your own business, come and find out about Arbonne. And if you're already a freelancer but are looking something else to do in addition to your first profession (and in these more difficult times, it helps to have something to fall back on) then please feel free to drop in too!

If anyone has any questions prior to the meeting, I'd be more than happy to answer them.

Thanks
