Unreconstructed self-interest, I know, but if anyone felt inclined to vote for me in a competition (from as many email addresses as you might have, natch ;)), you'd help keep me in pole position of 25 finalists hoping to win a £5,000 holiday to South Africa! :)

Click here http://www.2by2holid...x?entry_id=618 for the voting button (and a blurry Seventies snap of me, aged 12, cuddling a lion cub - yes, I spent part of my childhood there and would love to go back!). Thanks in anticipation of even a handful more points to keep the next contender off my tail...

Two more - thank you! With only 10 between me and the next hopeful, every one counts!

A huge thanks to those who've voted - it's really appreciated! I'm still in the lead, if only by the skin of my teeth!

You're on, Palacegirl! I've regained the lead by 221 to 206, though I went to bed 8 points down, thanks to friends in different time zones! This is nerve-wracking! Roll on midnight on Sunday...

Ah, thanks, Billy! Much appreciated. By midnight last night, when the competition closed, I had 324 votes (85 above my nearest contender). :o I have to keep my fingers crossed for the next few weeks while judging takes place to see if I met the other criteria of 'originality', 'effort' and 'the difference the trip would make to my life'. If I win, it will be an amazing stroke of luck - I only heard about the competition because I happened to be in a shop in Shoreditch that had Capital Radio playing, on which it was advertised, and I never listen to it at home! I've been really touched by the friends of friends from around the world who voted, so even if I lose, it's been a heartwarming exercise in 21st-century connectivity. :)

Oh, Daz, huge thanks for trying, but you're a few hours too late! The voting closed last night at midnight and now I'm waiting to hear if I've been lucky! See my post above yours. :)

Gill - I have just read your entry and need to correct something you have said. It should read "all bare feet and braais" and not "all bare feet and barbecues"!!!!

I hope you win!

I know, I know - good spot! Or, better still, 'all bare feet, boerewors, bobotie, Bennie Boekwurm and braaivleis'! But the PR company judging the comp is British, so I didn't want to cause confusion! Are you a Saffa, thekraken?

It's a sort of sausage - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boerewors

there's a place selling Saf Efrican food at Victoria station and another under the arches at Charing Cross. They've both been there for a while, so are probably OK (or lucky).

Boerewors is Afrikaans for farmer's sausage and it's a chunky, coarse-cut loooong sausage you put in its entirety on the barbie in a coil. Mm-mm :)
