With all this chatter about the imminent arrival of our very own tropical heatwave and with the summer holidays on the horizon I decided it was time to bite the bullet and head off on the dreaded annual bikini shop.

Now as most of us gals know a bikin shop begins months before the event with the no carb diet and grueling bootcamp sessions followed by the even more painful removal of the winter pelt.

And if you think that's bad then comes the really traumatic part - the sourcing of the bikin which involves several full body strips in cramped changing rooms with badly fitted curtains- you know the ones where the material doesn't quite reach either side. Well to make things worse I noticed some bright spark has applied the changing room curtain format to this years bikin batch.

Bikini bottoms have been reduced to even tinier triangles than usual. I struggled to find any that were just a regular bikin without showcasing the butt cheeks. Even boring old high street store Next had a micro selection and Top Shop was obvioulsy targetting the Brazillian Beach Volleyball Team

Any suggestions re where to shop for a decent as opposed to indecent bikini?

Have I strayed in to all girlie territory? Me, if I'm allowed to express a preference is for something very modest:

Burkhinis are best.

Its a lot easier being a bloke. If last year's budgies don't fit we just take a pair of scissors to the old denims! See ya down the lido!

Frogside of the channel, it's a pre-requisite in most pools! Could never work out why.

I'll try and keep off this thread ..... fear I've sent it in the wrong direction (?) as usual.

You're quite right Senor and it's why I call speedos Johnny-Frenchmens and to be fair they can be easy on the eye when worn by a well honed gentleman.

Thanks misspoddy - wil give M&S and H&M another go.but can't be arsed ;) with rumaging through the chaos of TK Maxx.

And SL, I'll have you know last year I squeezed my butt into these:
