I regret joining Crystal Palace Recreation Centre - I have been now on three different weekends and the pools have been closed to "the public". I just received an email about the Brazilian Olympic squad, which I intrepreted as a polite "stay away", but I admit I read it in a bit of a mood.

You should think yourself lucky @ getting an email about this

You might as well foget that their is an Olympic size pool in Crystal Palace, as they are not about the casual user or even the public. They are just geared up for clubs and other professional sports events. I gave up trying to use that pool years ago, as they just couldnt care less about Joe Public!

The facilities at CP for swimming only seem to be for group/clubs or whatever it has been like it for years. An individual that lives locally is only useful to them to fill in the slots when they havent got bigger fish to fry. I remember only a handful of years ago reps from CP were knocking on doors, locally, to ask whether we would join and quoting some reduced rate - I asked one of them whether they could guarantee that with the membership I would be able to use any faciltiy as and when and do you know ... they said-.... they didnt know. I didnt join.

Delighted that Team Brazil will be based here in the Olympics, but surely as part of the trade off for some of our sports facilities being unavailable for use by members for the duration, we should be able to enjoy the spectacle of olympians in training at the sports centre. Sad then that the beach volley ball pitches have been screened off for starters!

I saw them putting that up last week and felt the same way (but couldn't find the right thread to put it on) as I was looking forward to a good old boggle at the ladies volley ball team. Large screen put up all around the access bridge!
Saw thier coaches arriving in Palace today so they are already here. Spelt their name wrong on the coaches though, it reads 'Time Brazil'

What happened to all the ideas of parades and parties and community welcomes? They were going to be 'our' team (time), letting a little of the tropical stardust scatter around us in our corner of peace and goodwill in London's otherwise heaving and mean metropolis. We were all gong to learn a few key phrases in Portuguese and survive on caiparhinas for a month.

Can one of you VN polyglots start us off with the vocabulary we need to say 'welcome to CP', 'good luck with your event'...etc.

Yep, I twice emailed the instigator of the initiative, thedot, and got no reply, so the idea seems to have withered on the vine.

I can order 2 chickens (non-spicy) and 2 beers in Portuguese, but that's about it... I think 'welcome' is 'Bem-vindo'.

So a bit like the summer it’s all turning into a bit of a damp squib.

Team Brazil have turfed everyone out of the NSC and put up barriers so we can’t even see elite athletics perform in the world class sport that is Beach Volleyball and there appears to be no meet and greet with the locals.

Out of interest I would guess they are paying an not unsubstantial sum to hire all the facilities of the Park. Do we know how much and if the money will be ploughed into the park?

Hell even a little Christ the Redeemer statue on the top site (have you seen the amount of tourists the that gets in Rio we could milk it over here on our elevated mountain top J )would be nice to acknowledge the small part the area played in Brazils Olympic heroics ( of course like the weather this is subject to actual results ;) )

Dazza I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't give a fug if an erection is in the London Borough of Bromley, Lambeth, Croydon or Southwark wherever it is I say down with erections, down, down, down and I'm sure all fine upstanding members of this community will agree on that.

A large statue of Christ in the middle of the top site dont make me laugh we would have WW3 on our hands !

Not only would you bring the basic local meddlers into action you would have the religious nuts jumping on the band wagon too !

Dazza

PS A bit of replacement ply up ere causes a storm in a teacup !
