Ha! Poor old Croydon.

I hope they did mention John Ruskin - whose grandmother lived in the mediaeval town centre (long since demolished). And D H Lawrence, teaching down at Selhurst.

As for Lord Byron, well he is a bit of a local for us - he went to a school at the corner of Dulwich Common and Lordship Lane (where The Grove Tavern is now) and used to consult Gypsies in Dulwich Woods.

If you count all the suburbs and outlying places, it would be quite easy to come up with 50 famous people with connections to Croydon - Kate Moss, David Lean, Peggy Ashcroft and Ronnie Corbett come to mind.
opposed to taking terrapins.

What other famous Croydonites (or one-time Croydonites) are there?

Apart from the ones above, I've got:

Roy Hodgeson (topical)
Martin Clunes
Partick Stewart
Kirsty MacColl
Arthur Conan Doyle
Philip Green
Noel Fielding
Jeff Beck
Tracey Emin
Derren Brown
Mark Butcher
Desmond Dekker
Quite a few footballers (Ian Wright, Carlton Cole, Steve Kember etc. etc.)
Various BRIT school graduates (Amy Winehose, Katie Melua, Adele, Kate Nash, etc.). Not sure we can count these!

Any more?

Hmmm, just wiki'd it and it seems you're right! Not that wiki should ever be considered a cast-iron source. Always thought he was from Croydon. Anyway, Wallington is close enough to the border to count ;)
