Does anyone have any recommendations for particular varieties of fruit trees to plant locally? We have room for 1 or 2 on a south-facing slope with (surprise, surprise) heavy clay soil.

I'm thinking apple and/or plum, with some raspberry canes elsewhere in our patch. Any tips on necessary soil preparation also gratefully received!

We've just moved into a house in SE20 and it has a plum tree which seems to be doing really well. It looks like it must be a few years old and the previous owner said that it does produce some plums too. The leaves were absolutely stunning until they all blew off in the recent wind!
