Blue Mountain coffee shop in Penge. How we initially welcomed this latest extension to the chain which has outlets in Dulwich and Sydenham in Penge, which is sorely in need of some new blood to revivify the high street and its surrounds. Maple Road seemed like the perfect spot for a new venture of this kind.

But what we actually got wasn't quite the whole picnic. In fact, Blue Mountain is the kind of place where an attractive shopfront and interior lull you into thinking the food and, at least, the coffee — its USP after all — are going to be good. Instead, it's a poky space which demands you share tables, which although is clearly aimed at families offers no changing facilities, where scrambled eggs on toast costs £4.50 and is served overcooked on dry toast, where the coffee itself is average at best and the staff are either very unhelpful, inept or completely overworked.

Over the road is the Blue Belle cafe - excellent food and good coffee, very friendly and welcoming, and with no airs and graces which it can't back up. The Blue Belle I'd go back to every time, but Blue Mountain, never again.
