The only shop up the palace you may remember is the bike repair shop in central hill near the the hollybush pub. Still run by the same family my uncle tells me

Nope that one is a blank.

I stand corrected Dazza. As soon as I saw the shop front on the Virtual streets section of Central Hill - It came back to me in a flash!

At about the age of 12/13 I was in the shop with my mother getting a tyre for my bike and somehow managed to get my thumb pinched in a brake lever - blood every where.

Can any one remember what the industrial place was on the right just as you turned into Westow Street from Church road. I say industrial all I remember was that they used to make something or other in the building in the 60's. For some strange reason I recall the machinery was in the upper floor.

I remember the parrot in the Queens. It was very rude. In fact at one time the parrot was in one bar and another bird was in the other bar further through. The language between the two birds got so bad that they had to remove one of them!

They did not have them back in those days.... I left the area in 1975

I think the parrot was called Max.

Hello, Joe,
Apart from the prefabs that I lived in that I mentioned about in my Email, the other prefabs that I remember was up the top of Hawke Road on the left towards Lunham road, as I was born and bred in upper Norwood I lived at 124 Central hill which is between Gibbs Avenue and roman rise, and is was a part of the Upper Norwood Council estate. I grew up, along with all of my friends going to Crystal palace park Norwood park, penge, Sydenham, and of course Anerley, plus West norwood, all the time after School, during the school holidays, and of course after work, and during the weekends. We went on the boats on the boating lake at Crystal palace as well, plus heaps of times we met blokes from the penge, Sydenham, and Anerley area, plus now I know where the Sylvan Prefab state was not that I ever got to know any on from there, at least I do not think so. as all of the years were in the late 50's. all of the 60's, so Take Care

Best Wishes,
Sylvia

Sylvia - I did not get that email - just trawled across this thread.
The boats were a fun place in the summer and the cafe where we all used to take the girls we picked up on the lake.

Send her a PM, Joe - it'll get copied to her email address. Fascinating long-running (mis)communication, by the sounds of it! :)

You'll be pleased to hear boats are back on CP's lower lake - though now they're pedalos! We've had so much rain, I haven't seen them in use yet!

Love the anecdote about you washing Ronnie Corbett's Bentley. :D

Wow! We are big Acker Bilk fans in my family. Aria was our 'inheritance track' from our dad, and, in fact, it was played at his funeral. Play any of the five of us the first three notes and we well up in Pavlovian fashion.

Joe, we live on Stambourne Way and were only talking about Aker Bilk, who lived in the house opposite us, the other night. What was it like in your day?

Charlie my memory is very hazzy as I was only 11/12 at the time.
I lived at Auckland Rise - Stambourne Way and Auckland rise were the only new buildings in the area at the time.
As far as I can make out looking at google maps Acker's place was just before The Dell going up the hill.
We called it the posh area as Auckland Rise was council and Stambourne was private.
The strange thing is I have no recollection of ever actually seeing the man himself.
I think the cleaning of the coach thing started from bob a job with the scout's.

From what I understand from a neighbour who has lived there since Stambourne Way was built, it was Aker Bilk's manager that lived there rather than the man himself hence the tour bus. Charlie, that house seems to have had a very interesting history, I'll DM you the neighbour who has told us about it and I'm quite sure they would fill in any gaps for you - the Stambourne Way guru.

Redbunny23 as soon as I read your post it came back to me! I am certain it was not Acker that lived there but possibly not even the manager just the driver of the tour coach (tour manager?)
