I'd recommend Alton Motors in Norwood High St.
MOT is about 52. They did mine very recently and i was very pleased with their service and friendliness/helpfulness.
I've had them do one or two things for me before as well, very reasonably.
My definite first choice in the area.

Forgot to add, if required, phone number is 8670 4034

Used Mark to get my car back on the road again after it spent 9 months doing nothing. Very friendly, reliable guy who doesn't BS you.

Will use him again but hopefully not too soon. :D

I have just moved to Woodside Green, and wonder if any forumites have used the MOT garage on Blackhorse Lane.
Any insights gratefully received.
Thanks,
Brumel

Have just bought an 54 plate VW passat diesel and now realise it needs a new cam belt and that this is a big, expensive job.
Have spoken to dealership at crown point but wondered if anyone could recommend another local garage that may be a bit cheaper.

I can thoroughly recommend PD Motors on Sydenham Road. They are absolutely brilliant. I have been using them for the past year for servicing and MOT and cannot fault them. Their details are: 216 Sydenham Road, Croydon 020 8684 2002.

I've just had my third experience of croxted road motors (the one opposite the plant nursery place).

While it wasn't free, I thought it was good value. I have a very old merc, so I need a garage to help me find economical ways of keeping it going (without leaving me stranded on the side of a motorway).

Just wanted to warn people to be careful if they go to Croxted motors. Our Fiesta failed its MOT at Kwik Fit due to its emissions - I was recommended Croxted motors by my parents who have gone there for years - 300 and a new catalytic convertor later and it failed again. The guy at Kwik Fit said cars rarely need a new convertor its usually a good tune up thats needed. They also put the convertor on too low and it kept catching on every speed bump I went over. After keeping the car for three days 'to sort out what hadn't worked' (and assuring us every morning that it would be ready that day) it finally passed its MOT (which I had to pay for again as the 10 day retest period had passed). However to add insult to injury the day after it came back I realised they had taken the spare tyre!! They denied having it for ages on the phone , and it was only when Mr IClipper started to really complain that they 'discovered' that it had been taken out while they did the MOT. Luckily we got it back and I certainly won't be going back there in a hurry.

A very good place to go is Alan Mills in Alma Place off Church Rd by the White Heart pub in SE19. He services all makes of cars but is a specilalist with VWs and knows about them inside out. I've used him and hes very good and reasonably priced. Would use him again without hesitation.

in the past I've also used AM Motors in Herne Hill and they were fine.

I've also used Croxted Motors and wouldnt recommend them. They were recommened to me by SG Smith but I had the feeling that Croxted Motors werent completely straight with me and did work that was not really necessary and hence a much larger bill than should have been.

Just dropped my car off here this morning for the full works, based on this recommendation. Will feedback results, but so far they seem very helpful and genuine.

Either they don't know, don't show...or just don't care what's going on in Norwood.

I used Alton Motors for our MOT and they were fine. They said she didn't have so much as a broken bulb and I was very proud.

Someone crashed into her overnight when she was parked on the road a while ago and she needs repairs to her wheel and arch. VW (for she is a Polo) at Crown Point quoted 700 based on a photograph they emailed to their mechanics so I was thinking of going to the VW expert off Church Road that someone mentioned here, a couple of posts up. Hope this is his sort of thing. Until I read that, I was going to go back to Alton but they don't mention specialising.

That car has been so good to me, I'm happy to say I remain a relative mechanic-finding novice so correct any of the above if I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Hi Spoon,

I've used Alan Mills (the VW specialist in Alma Place off Church Rd) and he's great. Whether they do repairs I'm not sure...... but he will recommend somebody good if he's unable to do the job. It's certainly worth your while contacting him.

I would avoid SG Smith - they are good - but being a dealership will charge you top wack for the job.

Good luck.

If you don't mind the travelling and it's not too inconvenient Queens Motors in Penge, I have had them do my MOT and service in the past - great service and very professional. If you want a garage closer to Norwood I would also say Alton Motors, I had them fix my electric windows - very good reasonsable priced service. Will be trying them for my MOT in August.

your silence speaks volumes.........

.. about my sheer laziness, aye! :-)

I dropped the car off at 8.15 on Monday morning, received a call about 9.30 to say that the MOT had failed on a couple of items - all of which I knew about. I gave the OK for the work to be done, which it was, and the car then passed the MOT. I picked up the car at 5pm later that day. Price wise it was fair, and I have no complaints regarding service or speed. So that's a thumbs up from me regarding Alton Motors.

Apologies for not updating the forum sooner guys!
