Hello, I'm new on this forum, and have just seen this thread.

I have used Alton Motors for 20 years or more and strongly recommend them. They are the sort of garage that will give you an honest appraisal of what really needs doing now and what can be deferred for another occasion. They are also friendly and helpful

I had my service and MOT done at Queens Motors last week and was very pleased. The guys there were very friendly and helpful. It's a registered Ford garage although they seem to take any make of car. Not sure if the Ford thing is recent as previously it's never been listed on the Ford website. Great for me as it means I don't have to take my car to Bromley anymore.

Has anyone used the Blackhorse Lane Service Station Woodside SE25? I have been using a garage in Brixton which is great for years but it is a bit far to go and also they don't take credit cards so want to try another garage. I would really appreciate any feedback anyone may have with regards to MOT's and repairs and if they are reasonable with their costs as I really am on a very tight budget.

Look forward to hearing from anyone and if you have other recommendations let me know.

Thanks

I haven't used that one but I did post to recommend Alton Motors on Norwood High Street on this thread as I had an efficient MOT done there in December. Nothing had to be done so the basic cost for my Polo was around 50, if memory serves. I don't actually know whether that's good or not but I had been told by more seasoned car owners to expect 100 so, whether Alton ripped me off or not (doesn't seem like it), I got a pleasant surprise. Perhaps they charge by complexity/time taken and, as we haven't so much as an electric window, maybe that's why it was lower than other people's.

My car is currently at Alton motors. People seem friendly enough. Although it failed its MOT. One more 200 bill to fix, but then i have an old mini that looks great but breaks down a lot. I will post my thoughts when i get the car back.

Just in case you're still looking, the Tel no. for Alan Hills motors (Alma Place, just along from the Alma pub) is 020 8653 3211. I can't recommend Alan highly enough - I've been going to him for years and he's always been very reasonably priced and helpful. It's just him and another mechanic so you get a more a friendly and personal service than with bigger set ups. He's also right in the heart of the triangle which makes it easy to catch a bus or train once you've dropped your car off.

I've used Queens Motors a couple of times, for MOT/service and for repairs and found them to be reasonably priced and efficient.

I am sorry to report that I have just had an absolutely disastrous experience with Alan Hills Motors which has left me enraged. I booked my car in for an MOT, not realising they were not an MOT Testing station. Rather than let me know that they were not an MOT Testing station they simply confirmed that my car was booked in this Monday morning. Later that day I was texted by my partner that the car "needed brake pads urgently" and that the total cost would be about 400. This seemed like a lot of money to me. Further investigation revealed that an MOT with Alan Hills costs closer to 170 - 60 for an MOT pre-check (not requested, not explained) 60 "waiting time" at the MOT Testing station they drive to (Croxted Motors) and then the cost of the MOT itself. I do not have a problem with Alan Hills offering this service per se - what I have a problem with is that NONE of this was explained to me and so I assumed that the most I would pay for an MOT would be 52 odd.

I pulled the car, paid Alan Hills 58.75 for the pre-MOT check (which I had neither requested nor been advised would take place) and through gritted teeth booked the car in myself with Kwik-fit in West Norwood which is an MOT Testing station. The car passed - the front brake pads (not rears) were an advisory but the car most certainly did not need front and rear pads urgently (according to kwik-fit and you might have concluded that they of anyone would have an interest in this work).

It was probably coincidence that my car had a sloshing sound in it as I left Alan Hills establishment, the source of which I have still not found, because it did rain a lot yesterday.

It was probably also coincidence that on the only other occasion one of my cars has visited Alan Hills its tyre was ripped open by glass in the drive that must have been left by recycling men.

I would rather see my car rust and rot than visit this place again.

See my previous post on this thread about Croxted Motors.... You had a lucky escape, our car was never the same after its brush with them and the extensive work that was 'essential' and we ended up trading it in for a new car. If Alan Hills use Croxted Motors for their MOTS - think twice about taking it there.

We've been happily using Roy Randall in Oak Grove Road ever since we got a quote from Masters of Beckenham, a Renault main dealer, and Roy did the work for half the price. It's a small operation in a row of workshops but Roy's small and experienced team is very committed to doing a decent and fairly-priced job. They are Renault specialists but work on other makes too. I highly recommend them. They are on 8778 4590.
We get our MOTs done at a place in Franklin Road, SE20.

It is hard to tell whether my previous post has been deleted or not and so apologies if I am repeating myself - I do not like the services of Alan Hills Motors of Alma Place at all. I am not sure I am allowed to say anything else but you can pm me and I will provide objective feedback. Hopefully I am allowed to say that I will shortly be involving Trading Standards and issuing a claim form in the county court as those are simply matters of fact.
