At long last, it looks as if the exterior of the pub is being renovated. Well there is scaffolding up anyhow and workmen clambering over it this morning.

Underneath the flaking plaster is an attractive building. Indeed there are signs of promise in Anerley Road - more new businesses opening, now just a handful of long-term empty premises. :)

This is one of my favourite local pubs, does the simple things well, friendly staff, beer, and footy on the tele! Nice secluded yard out the back, and as an added bonus the Chicago Town pizzas are a perfect side order :P

Even had a chance to chuck some darts the other weekend and reminded myself why I don't do that so often; it's OK no one got hurt.

I see this pub, my local (though I've never been in there!), last had a renovation in 2007, according to the previous poster. It's long been overdue another one!

The Paxton Arms is a decent local boozer. It's not my local but on passing by there a few times it's decent enough. The Guinness is good and it doesn't require sofa's, board games and a blackboard menu.

went there a couple of weeks ago - barman remembered our round - good for a sit round the table without having to shout or queue to get served - as said prev - yard out the back and sport on the tv - also found the people in there no nonsense and friendly - proper pub

My local too - although I don't use it very often. It certainly appears to be on the up with a couple of real ales now available. The Bombardier is usually very good if it is being turned over. Cheaper than most of the pubs up the hill too! Both the staff and the guvnor are competent and friendly. Definitely worth a visit on a Sunday when there is an abundance of free food on offer!

I feel terrible! :o In my earlier post, I was confusing the Paxton Arms (very smart local) with the Thicket Tavern (very scruffy local)! Apologies to all those who drink in this pub and thought I must have especially high aesthetic standards! :D

I'm getting confused with the other (newly named) Paxton thread re: the pub on the roundabout at the bottom of Gipsy Hill, nee The Mansion - dont these people think of the confusion they might be causing on here before they rebrand their hovel?

As for this Paxton (not sure Ive ever heard anypne refer to it as The Paxton Arms Hotel) havent been in it for about a year - can anyone else vouch for it still being a solid safe no frills pub?

Unless it gets bought up and turned into flats. Fingers crossed though!

It's a decent pub as it is. I suspect it will go residential which is bad news as you suspects it will be expensive housing (given proximity to Overground/rail services etc) or may go gastro pub. Of which we do not have a shortage locally.
