Near and at the top of Harold Road before turning into Beaulah Spa, that's where I tend to see them. Not good news about their flying antics, I don't like anything with more than four legs anyway. But if I do see one, I tend to walk around rather than feel the need to squash the thing. Plus I know there are one or two of them inhabiting my garage which I haven't opened in months.

Ironic that I own a garage but have never learnt to drive.

I remember they would live around the hole created by a fallen tree in the grounds of All Saints school. I don't think I've seen one since that tender age of about 10 (Yes, a very long time ago.)

There was a massive stag beetle flying around my garden on Saturday night (top of Grange Road). It's quite tree-y round where I am so I assume that would attract them. I actually thought it was a small bird at first as it was so big :o

Although they frighten me (one got caught in my hair as a child!), it was lovely to see it swooping around and generally having a lovely old time :D

Well, I saw my first stag beetle last night so have officially joined the club.

I was on the phone to my mum when this huge insect flew past our window. I didn't realise what it was at first but then remembered this thread :D . Quite a sight!

if I see one of those flying anything less than 3 feet from me I do not need to post anything as you'll hear a loud (masculine) scream!!!

I saw 4 in my garden (3 females and one male) on 7th June in Auckland Road - maybe they all come out on the same day every year in our road ! My new-to-the-garden young cat saw the male flying around, watched it land right in front of her (where he joined his ladies) & stayed transfixed til one of the females tried to climb up her fur.

In honour of the pretty/scary/strange/inspiring (you name it) stag beetles I have changed my avatar (perhaps temporarily) to a painting of these strange beasties. It is a bit difficult to see them at this scale, but gets the buzzy feeling....

There are loads of Stag Beetles around this year and every evening over the last week I saw several flying around the Thicket Road area. Is looking like this increase in numbers is being seen in all major Stag Beetle areas.

The Stag Beetles grubs spend years inside decaying tree stumps and are said to be able to delay emergence for a few years until a good summer comes along, so it looks like the last few bad summers has led to loads this year.
