Agreed. I love the email updates. I can ignore what CrashPlan is doing most of the time and a quick read of my email tells me that everything is hunky dory. Like James, I also back up to external hard drives using CrashPlan and Apple Time Machine.

Regarding cloud-based storage, I only use the most well-known storage servers. At the moment I'm using Dropbox and MobileMe. Apple is hardly likely to go bust anytime soon and Dropbox is one of the most widely used services. I sync to both and the files are backed up with Crash Plan and Time Machine. Nobody should be relying on cloud storage alone. That's very dangerous!

Using Dropbox for quite a lot of projects I am involved in and find it works really well for file sharing.

Still dangerous to rely purely on Cloud storage?

I only really need to back up photos - my docs are mainly in Google Drive.

Use Dropbox or another cloud service. Then back up via Crashplan to both a central server and at least one external hard drive. Crashplan allows you to back up to a number of places.
