you wouldn't know the bar was there unless you looked past what seems like a small restaurant, and I feel slightly worried about too many people finding this out. However, as far as I am concerned it is the best bar I have been to in england. But that's what happens when you try and pretend every bar you are in is in France, a bar where you smoke cigarettes, drink wine and wonder if you are really there.
It's special, the crumbling leather sofas where a spring in the cushion is a luxury are beautiful. The dark narrow staircase offers hope of an underground world where you may find absinthe and opium. It is more than just a bar, it is a place that takes you into your Parisian dreams.

We did have a couple of posts from residents who lived at the back of this place. They were less than pleased about the amount of noise coming from the bar late at night... so be considerate.

But yup, great bar... friendly barman. That's important - makes you feel comfortable. ;)

Gille, your friendly barman, had a big send off party two weeks ago and has now gone back to France. Numidie has been searching for a suitable replacement (as if it is possible) and re-opens from summer holidays tomorrow (Tuesday 16th August). I wonder who will be filling G's shoes?

After Smokies but before Numidie there was another restaurant called Kooks. It was only around briefly so some of you might not remember it. Here's a photo that will help to jog your memory... http://www.virtualno.../photo/1322.jpg

Heh, that was us. It can still get a bit noisy, but they seem to have been getting a little bit better at keeping the noise down on weeknights (after we called them a few times... <_< )

We were thinking of going there tonight, do they do food downstairs? I used to go there when it was smokies and loved the way you could just order a bottle of wine and some king prawns or another light but yummy dish rather than a great big meal. Is it still the same?

Regretably no... it's not the same.

But lucky for you Numidie got into the Times Top 100 Restaurants of The Year :)

(Smokies never quite made it that far)

I bet if they weren't too busy downstairs and you just wanted to order a starter, they wouldn't mind. Could be wrong though.

I think you can actually order a full meal to be delivered downstairs... We asked and were given menus downstairs by the friendly french barman. Ended up not eating though as we realised we were poorer than first realised!!

Your main problem will probably be getting a seat! Be there early or be lucky... ;)

I quite often go straight after work (7pm) and am usually the first one in!

Doesn't start to fill up till 8ish normally.

You can still order from the upstairs menu if you are downstairs, we have done it before.
