Spurred on by the great political debates of today, such as how much MPs pay for bath plugs and the cost of clearing their moats, I thought we could have a serious debate about a long standing issue...

I am of course talking about the crisp problem. Some manufacturers use green for Cheese and Onion and blue for Salt and Vinegar, and others have them they other way around. In a world full of nut allergy sufferers and other dietary restrictions it is very important that packaging carries warnings of all manner of things and yet it is so easy for one flavour to be mistaken for another. This has to stop before someone gets hurt.

Please let us know how strongly you feel about this problem and put forward any ideas you have to resolve it.

If we reach a consensus on this issue we could always put it forward as a petition for the PM.

Wow, you must have a lot of time on your hands. To be honest the colour of a crisp packet doesn't cross my mind, I just read the label to find out what flavour it is.

Just think how much time you'd save if the colours were standardised... if you multiply up the time you take reading which flavour is on the packet by the number of packets consumed in a lifetime, and multiply it again by the population of the crisp-faring nations then its easy to see that hundreds of minutes could be saved and put to better use.

I previously believed that the ISO convention for identifying cheese and onion crisps was green. However, many years ago I bought some crisps in a green packet in Denmark and changed my mind. They were green because they were mint flavoured! They were disgusting and I turned a very similar shade of green too! :blink:

Best crisps EVER - Tomato Snaps (red). Or Transformers Pickled Onion flavour (black) B)

Oh and Scampi Fries (green) ... they do count as crisps... don't they? :unsure:

I went with my instinct but this was a tough vote to cast once I read both ways. But I'm clear now where I stand. Veg is veg, the great outdoors...

I thought this problem went away when Golden Wonder who used to do cheese and onion crisps green, and Walkers who did them blue became more dominant and Golden Wonder (which where by far my favourite at the time) fell by the wayside.

Its rare to find Golden Wonder crisps these days, but Walkers crisps are just everywhere.

Must have too much time on my hands, but I do love crisps. Gave them up for Lent just gone and it was a very long forty days and nights!!

Onions have a green tinge and the cheese come from cows which eat alot of green grass - Salt I mainly identify with the blue sea. Vinegar spoils the party a bit as it turns blue litmus paper red - but on the whole its def a green cheese and onion, blue salt and vinegar for me!

I think Andy has an excellent grasp of crisponomics. ;)

ChewderOde, I like your thinking... would it help to think of vinegar as being like the sea because they are both liquids?

I believe this to be the internationally recognised colour coding for crisps:
Plain = red
Salt 'n' vinegar = blue
Cheese 'n' onion = green
Smokey bacon = claret
Chicken = yellow
Prawn cocktail = pink
Beef = brown
Worcester sauce = purple

Now that we're all eating 'forgotten cuts', may I also suggest the following:
Tripe 'n' onion = white
Liver = grey
Kidney = taupe
Bread 'n' dripping = cream
