****New art exhibition by Sheila Ann Hearsum****

Sheila's exhibition is at The Alma for the next month.

Music this week at The Alma

Friday 18th
The Sax Pastilles
***Not to be missed***
"Depending on the line-up, we play a mix of fantastic prohibition era jazz, 30s and 40s swing and blues, with our singer changing the lyrics to classic tunes, making up blues on the spot and throwing in some risqe patter that always guarantees a smile. He's a comedy dynamo on the mike (as well as a stonking trumpeter, leading the King Groovy horns) playng jazz solos on everything from teapots, brown wrapping tape and his infamous musical toilet seat (really!). There's nothing quite like the sound of the front line instruments weaving in and out of each other when it all gets cooking. It' always a colourful carnival atmousphere when we play, with plenty of audience participation."

Saturday 19th
ADHDjs
***Sure to get you dancing!***
infectious indie/electro/rave/mashup Dj sets
"Remixing at such a young age promises big things for these sleazy, electro dancehall DJs. They're young, certainly not dumb, and if you play your cards right you'll find out whether or not they're full of cum."
Barfly

Saturday 26th
Errol Linton's Blues Vibe
9pm

***Award winning blues!***
Three times winner of UK Blues Harmonica Player of the year, Errol Linton and band The Blues Vibe, play eclectic British blues, but with a nod to his Carribbean heritage. Singer, songwriter, harp player and bandleader, Errol carries the legacy of Little Walter, Junior Wells and Sonny Boy Williamson into the twenty first century, moving the genre forward by combining 50’s Chicago blues with gentle Jamaica rhythms. Accompanied by Jean-Pierre Lampe..double bass, Adam Blake guitar, Dominic Pipkin piano and Sam Kelly/Kenrick Rowe drums on the album, his blues is raw and bloody, an urban sound with rural roots. The Blues Vibe is one of the most real, unpretentious down home blues bands around. Moving effortlessly from Chicago Shuffle to Kingston Skank without missing a beat, they have gained an unrivalled live reputation in the regular London Blues circuit. Errol's first album 'Vibing It' had airplay and a session for BBC Radio 2 Paul Jones Blues Show, airplay from Bob Harris, Johnny Walker, Andy Kershaw, Charlie Gillett and a host of independent radio station Blues shows. He is established as a firm fixture on the UK and European Blues Festival and Club Circuit. In the words of the late John Walters 'Errol is as good a Harmonica player as anyone can reasonably hope to become, he is the real Deal'. His latest album, 'Roots Stew' shows Linton’s song writing developing alongside the band’s organic blues-reggae groove. The album has quickly picked up some glowing reviews, and is currently being showcased wherever the band plays. Errol has toured with Blues Man Henry Gray ( Howlin' Wolf's piano player for 14 years) in Spain and London in the 90's. The band have opened shows for Screaming Jay Hawkins,Blind Boys of Alambama,Charlie Musselwhite and Bo Diddley.

Hat Fitz & Cara Robinson

Friday 6th August.

From 8.30pm

Posted Image

What a combination!

One of Australia’s festival favourites and perennial showstopper Hat Fitz is now joined on stage by Northern Ireland’s critically acclaimed vocalist extraordinaire and multi instrumentalist Cara Robinson on drums, washboard, flute and tin whistle.

Recent performances overseas saw the duo play a total of 81 shows including some of the world’s most prestigious festivals across England, Ireland, France and Scotland to packed houses and rave reviews.

The blending of pre war hill country and delta blues with traditional celtic and early Australian folk has produced a truly unique musical style that’s seen audiences world wide drift off into the early morning, often drenched with sweat and always covered in smiles.

Sometimes referred to as “Queensland blooze with a twist” you’ll soon appreciate what all the fuss is about.

It’s raw, raucous and relevant.

Some upcoming musical highlights at The Alma...

FRIDAY 8TH OCTOBER
KING GROOVY & THE HORN STARS *LIVE*
AUTHENTIC BIG BAND

Formed in late 2005 in South London, the Horn Stars features the traditional big band line-up of five saxophones, four trombones, four trumpets, a rhythm section of piano, drums, bass and guitar, plus vocalist.

King Groovy and the Horn Stars has an extensive repertoire of big band charts by the jazz greats, from Duke Ellington to Glen Miller to Herbie Hancock, plus Latin, pop and funk favourites. We guarantee swinging tunes and danceable grooves.

FRIDAY 15TH OCTOBER
MORRISON & WALKER
*LIVE*

Steve Morrison on Guitar & Vocals
and Mark Walker on Drums & Percussion

Steve Morrison
Guitarist and songwriter Steve Morrison brings something distinct to the blues. Having developed an ability to blend bass-lines, chords and melodies into a seamless guitar style, he constantly amazes audiences: how can one man play two or three musical parts on the one instrument? How does he makes it look so effortless? Yet Steve is not another soulless technician. A master of open-chord tunings, Steve's slide guitar connects directly back to the Delta, colouring his many original songs — and highly individual takes on some classics — that are all delivered with a voice that oozes authenticity and passion. Everyone who's heard him agrees: Steve Morrison is not another copyist, he draws from the blues of the past to create an altogether modern, socially relevant new picture.

Mark Walker
Mark Walker has played percussion for Rolf Harris since the 1990s, appearing with him around the world, from the Albert Hall to Capetown, not to mention at his many infamous Glastonbury performances. Originally a kit player - he was one of the initial drummers in the Lion King - he has spent the past few years developing a style and technique that combines kit and percussion, creating an original and distinctive groove that makes him a perfect partner for Steve, adding both driving and subtle rhythms to the music.

This weekend's live music at The Alma-

Friday 7th January - live skiffle from those amazing skiffle kids THE SEVERED LIMB "The best skiffle band in the world!" - Gaz Mayall. Plus DJ Lost John.
"You know you’re in for a party when a band names its debut Woo Eee Ha Ha! and has hip-looking cartoon skeletons ska dancing on the front cover. Self-described on their MySpace page as “Those amazing skiffle kids,” The Severed Limb features an accordion, double bass, and washboard. These guys still play gigs on the streets of London even though they’ve opened for Imelda May and other better known acts. The four songs on Woo Eee Ha Ha! have fun, stripped-down arrangements and energetic harmonies that exude the excitement a live performance." - Review of their debut vinyl release http://brokenheartedtoy.blogspot.com

Saturday 8th January - peerless jazz funksters ALICE IN GROOVELAND plus guest DJs funk it up.
Expect anything from the classic 50s Blue Note sound to 70s space funk - spiced up with a dash of 90s acid jazz and Brazilian disco!
:)
