Coat of Arms above Gipsy Hill Station

Walking down Gipsy Hill the other week, I noticed a coat of arms on the station above the main entrance. It seems really out of place to have something so grand on a suburban rail station.

Anyone got an idea why it's there? :huh:

is it the badge of which ever railway company built the line originally?

Failing that, Elmo, I'll have to have a look tomorrow. I think I've noticed it but not thought to question it. Can't picture it now, though.

Probably. The "Portsmouth FC badge" of a yellow curve and a star above it forms the bottom right quardrant:

Brilliant bit of detective work... Thanks! So:

- The cross (top-left) represents London
- The two dolphins (top-right) Brighton
- The three half-lions/half-ships (bottom-left) the Cinque Ports
- The star and crescent (bottom right) Portsmouth
