Beer traps are also good. Submerge a plastic cup in the soil near your chosen plant and fill with beer. The following day you normaly find it full of drowned slugs and and snails.
Does work but is a bit of a waste of good beer.

Yes, they work - and I suppose drowning in beer is not such a bad way to go, if one has to.

Still, it is a shame to waste good ale. I'm trying the deterrent method of holly leaves in the sunflower pots. Seems to be working so far.

Incidentally, in favour of slugs and snails they do eat decaying leaves. And the snails attract thrushes.
opposed to taking terrapins.
