I ran past the athletics stadium in Crystal Palace Park the other day and it got me wondering about the old football stadium there. Was it on exactly the same spot? Was it still there until the athletics stadium was built?

Does anyone know of a site that has information - and ideally pictures, as I'd like to try to imagine what that area of the park was like before the horrific 1960s redevelopment?

The football stadium was on the smae land that the athletics stadium now occupies. It was the home of several international matches and FA cup finals.

I believe this is the only known picture: http://en.wikipedia....lPalace1905.jpg

Thanks for that - lovely picture! I just found this one from the Transmitter site too:

Hard to believe 120,000 people could have been fitted into that space! Any other contributions to this thread gratefully received...

I think they got kicked out by the army, who wanted it for training, SLR. They didn't have much choice about it!

NickJ, it was a long time before all seater stadiums. You can pack a lot more in if most of them are standing!

Sorry, SLR, didn't pick up on it

Looks like there's loads of pics kicking about. Just goes to show (once again) that wikipedia is not to be trusted!
