I recently stumbled on a "Victorian" Blog called "The Cat's Meat Shop - A Victorian rag bag" which features all sorts of stories and reports from that time, including this one about an exhibition at the palace. Thought it might be of interest.

Fascinating! Especially the dromedary racing. Poor lions, though - must have been a bit parky!

Fascinating read, so thanks for that. Presumably all this took place on the flat cricket field at the bottom of the park? Would be wonderful to see pictures. Hard to imagine camel racing there - and as for the "huge cage, in which he has placed twelve young lions, one tiger, three bears, three hyaenas, four cheetahs or hunting panthers, and one dog"... wonder how long the dog survived?

Very good but The Somali village has just moved down to Streatham or Little Somali as the locals like to call it!
