Im amazed no one got that - it is of course three colors blue, three colours white and three colors red.
Was really hoping I could lurk and guess without having tn set any clues as they are always bad. Heres one anyway.

One word.

He was indeed a private, but a private that was a personal assistant to a commisioned officer. A term widely used during the first and second world wars.
