Purple In The Park - 1st June 2002 Purple In The Park kicked off the Golden Jubilee celebrations in style. The gay and lesbian music and dance festival had an excellent line up including Grace Jones, Boy George, Kym Mazelle, Jacki Graham and Rosalla. It was undoubtedly the hottest day of the year with temperatures soaring to just under 30 degrees. |
There were people everywhere! An estimated 50,000 attended. |
The park layout was very well planned and there were plenty of staff on hand at the bars (taking bar tokens, a can of beer cost £3) and the food stalls sold noodles, burgers and other fast food. There were many dance arenas such as Atelier, Coco Latté, Heaven, Crash, Fiction and Salvation. The Crash arena was a tour de force and the Comedy Camp was handy as a chill down zone. |
The party spirit thrived. You could have a go at line dancing or if you were lucky (like this sailor boy) grab a dance with the Purple Radio mascot. |
Security for the VIP Backstage area was tight. Inside the Departure Lounge there was a cabaret singer accompanied on piano, luxurious purple crushed velvet sofas and regal chairs. Girls walked around with sushi canapés and a resident masseur offered complimentary neck massages. It was a very informal and relaxed atmosphere and celebrities such Graham Norton and Peter Hook were spotted fetching their own drinks from the bar. |
The Purple In The Park music festival had a definite Jubilee vibe and kept going until well into the night. It was only Saturday and we didn't have to go back to work again until Wednesday. Yippee! Let's Party! |
