How to Boost Your Self-Esteem

Self-esteem is the opinion we have of ourselves, and this can nurture out thoughts regarding life and challenges that come our way. Living with low self-esteem can affect your mental health and cause you to plunge into a dark mindset that prevents you from making the most out of life. If your thoughts are not controlled, it can become a long-term problem and cause you to suffer from anxiety and depression.

Building your self-esteem is a gradual procedure and, unfortunately, will not happen overnight. Still, there are many strategies you can use to begin feeling better about yourself both physically and mentally and help overcome negative thought processes:

  • Be kind to yourself

Self-esteem issues are born when the individual does not value themselves as is constantly comparing their looks or achievements to others. It is important to realize that no-one is the definition of perfect. Although you may be witnessing other people’s ‘perfect’ lives on social media, this is most often a false portrayal of reality. People will only share what they want the world to see and are not keen to reveal issues they are dealing with. Quit comparing yourself to others and, instead, say positive affirmations daily. Talk to yourself how you would typically speak to your closest friends, and you will start to feel much more self-assured.

  • Take on a challenge

Failing to step out of your comfort zone is one of the leading causes of low self-esteem. While you may prefer the safe and easy routes in life, you will only be holding yourself back from your own capabilities. Feeling uncomfortable from time-to-time is not a bad thing as it helps you prepare for stressful situations that often cannot be avoided. It would be worth taking on a new challenge that interests you or relates to your skillset or talent.

  • Stop worrying about what others think

Social media has become one of the biggest mental health triggers in recent times, so it would be sensible to cut yourself off from the online world and have a digital detox.

  • Let go of negative people

If your friends are negative and always dragging you down, it is bound to have an impact on your mental health. Although it may be difficult, it would be in your best interests to let them go and surround yourself with people who have a positive outlook on life. Those who see the best in everything and appreciate you will help you feel more confident in yourself.
